Character's name: Mozenrath, ruler of the Land of the Black Sand Canon: Aladdin the Series Age: 21-ish Gender: Male Wish: I wish I could just get out of here! Point in canon they're taken from: The end of The Secret of Dagger Rock, when Mozenrath is trapped inside the Crystal of Ix.
Character history: Mozenrath has never gone into a lot of details about his past, but we can gather that up through the events of the original Aladdin film he was the pupil of the sorcerer Destane who at that time ruled over the Land of the Black Sand. Mozenrath was raised by the sorcerer like a son, learning all he could from him. From a young age Mozenrath was a sorcery prodigy and his lessons with Destane came easily. He grew up surrounded by the luxury of Destane's palace, used to having mamluk servants take care of his every whim. He was also given a black sand worm, a magical eel-like creature, as a pet which he named Xerxes. Life was good for Mozenrath, but still he wanted more.
Destane may not have been smart enough to see the treachery in his young student, but he was still a formidable foe. As Iago once commented, even Jafar steered clear of him. Mozenrath, however, was determined. He made a deal with an unknown source to obtain the enchanted gauntlet he is now known to wear. The price was high, however; Mozenrath basically gave up his right forearm for the power the gauntlet granted him, leaving only bone behind and the promise of an early death. But it was all about the power to Mozenrath and he was convinced he'd find a way to extend his life eventually. He overthrew Destane to gain control of the Land of the Black Sand and, to add insult to injury, he reanimated Destane's corpse to turn him into one of his mamluk servants.
Taking over Destane's palace instantly granted Mozenrath more power as he now had access to the numerous magic artifacts Destane once owned. Also, as ruler of the Land of the Black Sand, he now had control over the mamluks and the black sand itself. Still it was never enough for Mozenrath. He wouldn't be satisfied until he'd surpassed every sorcerer and taken over the Seven Deserts. In his pursuit of more power he summoned himself a Therdac - a creature that devoured magic. Unfortunately the creature got the best of Mozenrath and, rather than risk his own life trying to put the restraining collar on the beast, he went in search of someone less magical to do his dirty work for him. That person ended up being Aladdin.
Aladdin didn't like Mozenrath from the start. After he expressed no interest in the fact that the creature he'd released in Agrabah's marketplace could have hurt someone, Aladdin stubbornly said that he wasn't going to work for Mozenrath, no matter how much gold he was willing to pay. This prompted Mozenrath to use more creative measures. He stole Genie and his lamp and left them inside his palace with the Therdac. If Aladdin wanted to save his Genie, he'd have to collar the creature for Mozenrath. Aladdin eventually managed to do this, though once Genie and carpet were safe he returned to set the Therdac free again. It came after Mozenrath, forcing him to send it back to it's own world in order to save himself. Thus began Mozenrath's secondary priority of defeating Aladdin.
The two crossed one another time and time again, between Mozenrath's purchase of the Wind Jackal Scirocco to use as a weapon to the time when Mozenrath tried to take over Aladdin's body to save himself from the decaying effect of his gauntlet. While never exactly winning, Mozenrath wasn't ever completely defeated either. In fact when returned to his own body after the switching incident with Aladdin, he found that he'd even regained health and time for his efforts. It wasn't until the incident at Dagger Rock that Mozenrath truly found himself bested on all fronts.
Capturing Aladdin and holding him in exchange for his Genie, Mozenrath made the mistake of underestimating Princess Jasmine as the more typical princess-type. When she stormed her way onto the scene Mozenrath mocked her, but ultimately in focusing on Genie and Aladdin as threats rather than her, he opened himself to her attack. While trying to seal the Genie in the giant Crystal of Ix that was hidden within Dagger Rock, Jasmine grabbed Mozenrath by his cape and pulled him into the beam. Instead of Genie, Mozenrath and Xerxes were the ones trapped in the crystal.
Personality: Mozenrath is a spoiled brat of a necromancer. This is partly due to his upbringing in Destane's opulent (if morbid) palace and partly because his power and abilities make it easy for him to simply take anything he wants. He's used to being in charge, obeyed, and feared. He has trouble understanding people who aren't motivated by the same things he is, namely power and wealth. Those people he looks down on as idealistic fools... granted he looks down on everyone as fools. It's not entirely their fault. How could they ever hope to match up to someone as magnificent as himself?
In addition to being egotistical and arrogant, Mozenrath also has a touch of megalomania - what good villain doesn't? He needs to been in charge and manipulate everything around him. From his undead slaves to the kingdoms he knows will eventually be under his rule, Mozenrath isn't happy unless everyone is either obeying him or suffering for their defiance. In fact he rather enjoys that whole suffering part. It makes for good entertainment and it satisfies that morbid cruelty that Destane helped nurture in his student. In fact his reacting to the suffering of others is usually laughter, a smug grin, and a few jokes at his victim's expense. For a sick, twisted necromancer, Mozenrath has a pretty healthy sense of humor. Having Xerxes around as his yes-man (er, yes-eel?) only encourages him.
So far Mozenrath has yet to have any real romantic interest. He admits to being married to his work because he just loves it that much. That doesn't stop him from teasing Princess Jasmine when he gets the chance, though whether he does this out of any actual attraction or just to piss her off is debatable. Xerxes seems to be all the company Mozenrath needs, aside from the occasional captives. After all, he needs an audience to evil-monologue at now and then.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Mozenrath's obvious strength lies in his magic. He's talented and cunning with a vast knowledge of spells and magical artifacts. Necromancy is his forte, though he has a variety of purely offensive and pain-inflicting spells that he uses generously. He's also fairly good at manipulating others by playing at what he sees are their weaknesses, such as their caring and concern for their friends.
However he's fairly blind to his own weaknesses, one of which being his poor understanding of those motivated by love and compassion. He also sometimes makes broad assumptions based on what a person is, having incorrectly guessed that Aladdin would be swayed by gold and Jasmine would remain weeping in the palace when Aladdin was kidnapped. As far as his magic goes, Mozenrath isn't all powerful. In fact without his gauntlet his power is significantly lowered. When caught by surprise he often doesn't have time to collect his thoughts enough to cast spells such as levitation to prevent a fall. And finally, as mentioned before, his gauntlet is slowly decaying his body, meaning he'll die in only a few years unless he finds other ways to prolong his life.
Sample Journal Post: I suppose I've no right to be picky about my current situation since anything is better than staying confined within the Crystal of Ix, but when I wished to be free of my prison I did sort of expect to, you know... be returned to my own home.
This place is spectacular, of course, but I already have a kingdom of my own as well as several more to inevitably come. It's just a bit annoying that I'm now cut off from those things for the sake of what? Some shiny, happy little vacation? Still, I suppose I should look at this as an opportunity in disguise. There's no doubt plenty of magic in this place. It would be an awful shame to see that magic gone unused... unused by me that is. I'll be doing this land a favor by commandeering it for myself.
